School of Life Science and Technology>> INTRODUCTION The School of Life Science and Technology was established in 1999 and evolved from the Department of Bioengineering that was founded in 1980. It now consists of four departments including Biomedical Engineering, Biotechnology, Biological Science and Systematic Biology and the Center for Teaching Excellence. As a college at the interface of multi-disciplinary areas of medicine, engineering and basic science, it is one of the first colleges that award Ph. D. degree in Biomedical Engineering in China. The College has two nationally emphasized majors in Biomedical Engineering and Biophysics. It has established National Training Center for Bioinformatics & Biopharmaceutics, National Training Center for Biological Science and Hubei Province Demonstration Center for Teaching Excellence in Biology (Life Science). The College offers academic programs in many cross-disciplinary areas of Life Science and awards BS, MS and Ph.D. degrees. The current enrollment is 3,045 with 2,403 undergraduate, 272 MS and 370 Ph.D. students. In addition, there are two post-doctoral training programs in Biology and Biomedical Engineering within the College. There are a total of 185 faculty and staffs in the College with 44 full professors and 51 associate professors, and 91 % of teaching faculty has Ph.D. degree. The College now has multiple research centers and key laboratories with highly motivated principal investigators who seek new frontier at the interface of medicine, engineering and life science. Over the years, the college has recruited many young and talented investigators who were trained oversea as well as internationally recognized scholars as adjunct professors. Among them, two professors are honored with the National One Thousand Talents Program, seven are appointed by Cheung Kong Scholar Award Program as Distinguished or Visiting Professors, three are awarded with National Distinguished Young Investigator Grant, thirteen have been recognized as Ministry of Education New Century Extraordinary Talent, seven are Hubei Province Distinguished Young Investigators, three are Hubei Province Chutian Scholars, three are Hubei Province Young Investigators and one is Hubei Province Distinguished Mentor. Since 1999, more than 130 research projects have been accomplished with governmental supports such as 973 and 863 programs and National Science Foundation, resulting in more than 27 patents and 820 publications (SCI or EI cited: 380). >> Research Institutes and Key Laboratories
